Key Terms: interpret assessment data, social significance, cultural responsiveness

Definition: Social significance – sometimes we get caught up in our ability to move behavior, and we forget that the whole point of our jobs is to make people’s lives better, not just demonstrate that we understand how science works (as important as that is).

Let’s consider…

  • Is it realistic in real life for real people?
  • Does it matter in real life for real people?
  • Do any skills acquired maximize the likelihood the client (and others) will experience short and long-term reinforcers, and minimize exposure to short-term and long-term punishers in the natural environment?

If multiple goals and procedures get “yes” answers, what matters the most? What is the most important and doable? (Assessments can help tremendously!)

Remember that learning to do the skills listed in this TCO item must include high quality supervision. This item is all about integrating a lot of knowledge and skills!
