Target Terms: effects of behavior change

Extinction and punishment (and even lean schedules of reinforcement!) can elicit emotional responding in clients.
Some considerations…
- Extinction often leads to an initial increases in rates of target behavior, as well as other variations in behavior
- Especially when insufficient reinforcement of other behaviors takes place
- Consider if stakeholders can actually do the procedures you’ve designed
- Consider whether or not the team can keep the client safe even if a burst were to occur based on the individual’s repertoire
- Extinction can make treatment more efficient
- It makes the contingencies clearer
- So can adjusting the quality, magnitude, etc. of reinforcement of alternative/other behavior
- Extinction can be utilized safely (in some situations)
- Understand your learner’s repertoires
- Does your learner engage in unsafe behaviors? Or behaviors that come close to being unsafe? What would extinction look like (increased variability and intensity in responding)?
- Understand your learner’s repertoires
