Target Terms: effects of behavior change

Extinction and punishment (and even lean schedules of reinforcement!) can elicit emotional responding in clients.

Some considerations…

  • Extinction often leads to an initial increases in rates of target behavior, as well as other variations in behavior
    • Especially when insufficient reinforcement of other behaviors takes place
  • Consider if stakeholders can actually do the procedures you’ve designed
  • Consider whether or not the team can keep the client safe even if a burst were to occur based on the individual’s repertoire
  • Extinction can make treatment more efficient
    • It makes the contingencies clearer
    • So can adjusting the quality, magnitude, etc. of reinforcement of alternative/other behavior
  • Extinction can be utilized safely (in some situations)
    • Understand your learner’s repertoires
      • Does your learner engage in unsafe behaviors? Or behaviors that come close to being unsafe? What would extinction look like (increased variability and intensity in responding)?
